Intermediate Disturbance Hypothesis

The Intermediate Disturbance Hypothesis is an ecological concept proposing that species diversity often peaks at moderate levels of disturbance, such as fire, flooding, grazing, or storms. It links disturbance frequency and intensity to competition and survival: infrequent or mild disturbance may allow dominant competitors to exclude other species, whereas severe or frequent disturbance can remove organisms before communities recover. Intermediate disturbance can promote coexistence by creating opportunities for colonization, maintaining environmental heterogeneity, and limiting competitive dominance. In biology, the hypothesis informs research on succession, community assembly, habitat management, and biodiversity conservation, although its predictions vary among ecosystems and taxa.

Ecological Disturbance

2026

An ecological disturbance is a temporary disruption in the environment resulting from abiotic, biotic, or anthropogenic factors, causing a pronounced change in an ecosystem. The impact of an ecological disturbance, which can depend on its intensity, frequency, and spatial distribution, plays a significant role in shaping the species diversity within the ecosystem.Ecological disturbances can be caused by an event as small as the trampling of underbrush to an incident as wide-ranging as a forest...

Disturbances in Heart Rhythm

2025

Arrhythmia or dysrhythmia refers to an abnormal heart rhythm caused by a defect in the heart's conduction system. It can cause the heart to beat irregularly, too quickly, or too slowly, leading to symptoms like chest pain, shortness of breath, and fainting. Factors such as stress, caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, cocaine, certain drugs, congenital defects, diseases, and electrolyte abnormalities can trigger arrhythmias. Arrhythmias are categorized by their speed, rhythm, and origin. A slow heart...

What is a Hypothesis?

2023

A hypothesis can be a simple sentence or statement about a property or any phenomenon observed or predicted for a population. It is usually a claim about a property of the population. It can be stated for any field observations or experiments. A hypothesis statement cannot be said to be right or wrong as it is merely a statement. It needs to be tested through an elaborate data collection process and an appropriate statistical test. A hypothesis should be a general but not a vague statement. It...

Here we describe a protocol using the web-based drug repurposing hypothesis generation tool: "RE:fine Drugs." This protocol can be modified to a user's preferences at the level of the query type (gene, drug or disease) and/or the range of available advanced options.

Types of Hypothesis Testing

2023

There are three types of hypothesis tests: right-tailed, left-tailed, and two-tailed. When the null and alternative hypotheses are stated, it is observed that the null hypothesis is a neutral statement against which the alternative hypothesis is tested. The alternative hypothesis is a claim that instead has a certain direction. If the null hypothesis claims that p = 0.5, the alternative hypothesis would be an opposing statement to this and can be put either p > 0.5, p < 0.5, or p ≠ 0.5.
