Amino Acyclic Compounds

Amino acyclic compounds are open-chain organic molecules that contain one or more amino groups, such as primary, secondary, or tertiary amines, within a noncyclic carbon framework. Their nitrogen lone pair gives them characteristic basicity and nucleophilicity: they can accept protons, form hydrogen bonds, and attack electron-deficient centers in substitution or addition reactions, with behavior influenced by alkyl substitution and nearby functional groups. In chemistry, these compounds serve as building blocks and intermediates for synthesizing pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, polymers, and other functional molecules, while their solubility and acid-base properties support separation, derivatization, and analysis in laboratory and industrial workflows.

This protocol describes a clinically-applicable means of dissolving hydrophobic compounds in an aqueous environment using combinations of self-assembling peptide and amino acid solutions. Our method resolves a major limitation of hydrophobic therapeutics, which lack safe, efficient means of solubility and delivery methods into clinical settings.

Radiolabeled Amino Acid Uptake Assay to Quantify Cellular Uptake of Amino Acids

This video demonstrates an in vitro technique for estimating amino acid uptake by bone marrow-derived stromal cells. Na+-dependent amino acid transporters mediate the uptake of radiolabeled amino acids inside the cells, and the cellular uptake is estimated by measuring the radioactivity.

Amino acids are the monomers that comprise proteins. Each amino acid has the same fundamental structure, which consists of a central carbon atom, or the alpha (α) carbon, bonded to an amino group (NH2), a carboxyl group (COOH), and to a hydrogen atom. Every amino acid also has another atom or group of atoms bonded to the central atom known as the R group. There are 20 common amino acids present in proteins, each with a different R group. Variation in the amino acid sequence is responsible for...

Olefin Metathesis Polymerization: Acyclic Diene Metathesis (ADMET)

2023

Acyclic diene metathesis polymerization or ADMET polymerization involves cross-metathesis of terminal dienes, such as 1,8-nonadiene, to give linear unsaturated polymer and ethylene. As ADMET is a reversible process, the formed ethylene gas must be removed from the reaction mixture to complete the polymerization process. Similar to cross-metathesis, ADMET also involves the formation of metallacyclobutane intermediate by [2+2] cycloaddition of one of the double bonds of a terminal diene with...

The urease method of sample preparation for GC/MS analysis of intermediary metabolites is presented by its inventor. The method allows one-step follow-up of newborn screening for inborn errors by tandem mass spectrometry by quantifying carbohydrates, organic and amino acids all in a single process.
