Hexagonal System

The hexagonal system is a crystallographic system that classifies solids according to their lattice geometry and symmetry, particularly a principal sixfold rotational axis. Its unit cell has two equal, coplanar axes separated by 120° and a third axis perpendicular to that plane, producing characteristic hexagonal arrangements when viewed along the principal axis. In chemistry, this framework helps describe crystal structures, atomic packing, and direction-dependent properties in minerals, metals, ceramics, and other materials. Identifying hexagonal symmetry supports diffraction analysis, phase characterization, and interpretation of how crystal architecture influences reactivity, conductivity, strength, and growth.

Metallic Solids

2020

Metallic solids such as crystals of copper, aluminum, and iron are formed by metal atoms. The structure of metallic crystals is often described as a uniform distribution of atomic nuclei within a “sea” of delocalized electrons. The atoms within such a metallic solid are held together by a unique force known as metallic bonding that gives rise to many useful and varied bulk properties. All metallic solids exhibit high thermal and electrical conductivity, metallic luster, and malleability. Many...

Physical Properties Of Minerals I: Crystals and Cleavage

2023

Source: Laboratory of Alan Lester - University of Colorado Boulder The physical properties of minerals comprise various measurable and discernible attributes, including color, streak, magnetic properties, hardness, crystal growth form, and crystal cleavage. Each of these properties are mineral-specific, and they are fundamentally related to a particular mineral’s chemical make-up and atomic structure. This experiment examines two properties that stem primarily from symmetric repetition of...
