Polymer Density Properties

Polymer density properties describe how a polymer’s mass is distributed within a given volume, providing insight into its structure, composition, and performance in chemistry and materials science. Density reflects molecular packing: tightly packed crystalline regions generally increase density, whereas branching, chain irregularity, and free volume reduce it; temperature and additives can also alter measured values. Density measurements help distinguish polymers, assess crystallinity and processing effects, and predict characteristics such as buoyancy, stiffness, and dimensional stability. Comparing density across samples supports quality control, material selection, and the design of plastics and polymer composites with targeted physical and mechanical properties.

Classification and Mechanical Properties of Synthetic Polymers

2026

Synthetic polymers are classified as elastomers, fibers, or plastics based on their crystallinity. Crystallinity, the degree of long-range order in the solid state, influences the mechanical properties (stretching or contracting) of elastomers. Elastomers are flexible polymers that can expand or contract easily upon the application of an external force. They have numerous crosslinks that pull them back into their original shape when stress is removed. Silicones, for instance, are highly elastic...

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA Polymeric materials are widely used in civil structures, with uses ranging from very soft sealants to more rigid pipes in water and wastewater systems. The most basic definition of a polymer is a molecular structure with repeating subunits. The term polymer comes from Greek, where "poly" means many, and "-mer" means basic unit. Monomers, or single mers, are the specific repeating units. With...

The word polymer is derived from the Greek words “poly” which means “many” and “mer” which means “parts”. Polymers are long chains of molecules composed of repeating units of smaller molecules, known as monomers. They either occur naturally, such as DNA and proteins, or can be constructed synthetically, like plastics. They have varied structural characteristics, such as linear chains, branched chains, or complex networks, that contribute to the properties that they exhibit. Additionally,...
