Nephrolithotomy

Nephrolithotomy is a surgical procedure that removes kidney stones by creating an access tract into the kidney, making it an important treatment for stones that cannot be managed effectively with less invasive methods. In percutaneous nephrolithotomy, clinicians guide instruments through a small incision in the back, use imaging to reach the renal collecting system, fragment stones with laser or ultrasonic lithotripsy, and extract the pieces. The approach is commonly used for large, numerous, or complex calculi and can relieve urinary obstruction. Clinical training emphasizes patient selection, tract access, stone clearance, and monitoring for complications such as bleeding, infection, or residual fragments.
