Increment Corer Sharpening

Increment corer sharpening is the maintenance process used to restore the cutting edge of a tree increment corer, enabling clean extraction of wood cores for environmental and ecological analysis. By removing burrs and reshaping the bevel so the bit cuts smoothly through bark and wood, sharpening reduces resistance, core damage, and sampling effort. Properly maintained corers support reliable dendrochronology, which uses growth rings to investigate tree age, climate variability, disturbance history, and site conditions; consistent tool performance therefore improves sample quality and strengthens comparisons among environmental records.
