Tumor Regression Monitoring

Tumor regression monitoring is the systematic assessment of how a tumor changes in size, structure, and biological activity during or after treatment, providing evidence of therapeutic response. It uses serial imaging, clinical findings, and blood or tissue biomarkers to track tumor burden and interpret treatment-related changes; in immunotherapy, immune-cell infiltration can temporarily enlarge a lesion, creating pseudoprogression rather than true growth. In cancer immunology, this monitoring supports evaluation of immune-based therapies, helps distinguish response from resistance or toxicity, and guides treatment decisions and research into biomarkers that predict durable tumor control.

Regression Toward the Mean

Regression toward the mean (“RTM”) is a phenomenon in which extremely high or low values—for example, and individual’s blood pressure at a particular moment—appear closer to a group’s average upon remeasuring. Although this statistical peculiarity is the result of random error and chance, it has been problematic across various medical, scientific, financial and psychological applications. In particular, RTM, if not taken into account, can interfere when researchers try to extrapolate results...

2023

This protocol describes a technique for monitoring extracellular matrix rigidity changes by using particle-tracking microrheology (PTM). This is done by culturing 3D pancreatic tumor spheroids into ECM with embedded fluorescent probes for video particle-tracking and analysis.

Source: Huang, Y. et. al., Longitudinal Morphological and Physiological Monitoring of Three-dimensional Tumor Spheroids Using Optical Coherence Tomography. J. Vis. Exp. (2019)This video demonstrates the use of optical coherence tomography (OCT) to monitor tumor spheroids in a multi-well plate by capturing high-resolution cross-sectional images. By analyzing light reflections from cellular structures, OCT constructs 3D models to assess morphological features like size and shape while also...

An Orthotopic Model of Serous Ovarian Cancer in Immunocompetent Mice for in vivo Tumor Imaging and Monitoring of Tumor Immune Responses

To study in vivo tumor growth and tumor microenvironment, we used a syngeneic and orthotopic mouse model of ovarian cancer in immunocompetent animals. We transduced a mouse tumor cell line (MOV1) with Katushka fluorescent protein (MOV1KAT) and here we show its orthotopic implantation in ovary and in vivo imaging.

Regression Analysis

Regression analysis is a statistical tool that describes a mathematical relationship between a dependent variable and one or more independent variables. In regression analysis, a regression equation is determined based on the line of best fit– a line that best fits the data points plotted in a graph. This line is also called the regression line. The algebraic equation for the regression line is called the regression equation. It is represented as: In the equation, is the dependent variable, x...
