Porcine Cadaver Model

A porcine cadaver model is a nonliving pig specimen used to study anatomy, practice medical procedures, and evaluate surgical approaches in a realistic biological context. Because porcine tissues and organ arrangements can resemble those of humans, the model allows learners and researchers to identify anatomical structures, dissect tissue planes, and rehearse instrument handling without immediate risk to patients or live animals. In medicine, porcine cadavers support anatomy education, surgical skills training, procedural planning, and assessment of new techniques. They provide hands-on experience that can strengthen technical competence while complementing imaging, simulation, and clinical instruction.

The porcine model of liver normothermic machine perfusion (NMP), described here, can be successfully used to study NMP as a preservation strategy, a tool for viability assessment, and a platform for organ repair. It holds a high translational value, however it is technically challenging and labor-intensive.
