Posterior Left Atrium

The posterior left atrium is the back portion of the heart’s left atrial chamber, an anatomical region that receives oxygenated blood from the pulmonary veins and contributes to normal cardiac filling. Its thin posterior wall lies close to the esophagus and contains the pulmonary vein openings, where electrical activity can influence atrial rhythm. This anatomy is important in medicine because structural changes such as atrial enlargement or fibrosis may contribute to atrial fibrillation. Echocardiography, cardiac computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging help assess the region, while its proximity to the esophagus is a key consideration during catheter ablation procedures.

The following protocol describes the methodology for the acquisition and analysis of echocardiographic images used to obtain the Left Atrial Volume (LAV), Aorta (Ao) diameter, and Pulmonary Artery (PA) diameter in mice. This technique is a non-invasive, non-terminal procedure that allows assessment of the cardiopulmonary function.

Three-Dimensional Modeling of the Left Atrium and Pulmonary Veins with a Precise Intracardiac Echocardiography Approach

2023

Accurate intracardiac echocardiography (ICE) shows significant accuracy in estimating the left atrial structure, a prospective and promising cardiac structure estimation method. Here we propose a protocol for three-dimensional modeling of the left atrium and pulmonary veins with ICE and fast anatomical mapping (FAM) catheter remodeling.

The accompanying video describes a procedure for percutaneous placement of the WATCHMAN Left Atrial Appendage (LAA) Device. The WATCHMAN is a nitinol device designed to be permanently implanted at, or slightly distal to, the opening of the left atrial appendage (LAA) to trap blood clots before they exit the LAA, preventing thromboembolic stroke.
