Serum Biochemical Markers

Serum biochemical markers are measurable substances in blood serum that provide information about organ function, tissue injury, metabolism, or disease activity. Their concentrations change when cells release intracellular components, alter metabolic pathways, or respond to inflammation, allowing laboratory measurements to reflect physiological and pathological processes. In medicine, clinicians use these markers to support diagnosis, assess disease severity, monitor treatment response, and estimate prognosis, often by interpreting results alongside symptoms, imaging, and other tests. Because biological variation and non-disease factors can influence serum levels, careful reference ranges and clinical context are essential for accurate interpretation.
