Chemical Sensitivity Testing

Chemical sensitivity testing is the systematic evaluation of how an organism, tissue, or cell responds to a chemical exposure, providing evidence about toxicity, tolerance, and biological effect. In neuroscience, researchers apply controlled concentrations and conditions, then measure outcomes such as neural activity, sensory responses, behavior, or cellular viability to characterize dose-response relationships and identify altered nervous-system function. These tests support neurotoxicology, drug development, environmental health research, and the assessment of chemicals that may disrupt neuronal signaling. By linking exposure levels with measurable neurological outcomes, the approach helps clarify mechanisms of chemical action and informs safer experimental and public-health decisions.

2023

Robert M Rioux, Ajay Sathe, Zhifeng Chen, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA The use of reagents sensitive to oxidation or moisture necessitates the use of air-free techniques. A Schlenk line is a routinely used glass apparatus to perform air and moisture free manipulations in a chemical laboratory1. The Schlenk line is widely utilized by many chemists since it allows them conduct air or water sensitive reactions even without the expense and restriction of a glove box. The...

This protocol is designed to demonstrate exposure method of cell cultures to inhaled toxic chemicals. Exposure of differentiated air-liquid interface (ALI) cultures of airway epithelial cells provides a unique model of airway exposure to toxic gases such as chlorine. In this manuscript we describe effect of chlorine exposure on air-liquid interface cultures of epithelial cells and submerged culture of cardiomyocytes. In vitro exposure systems allow important mechanistic studies to evaluate...
