Drosophila Olfactory Shock Learning

Drosophila olfactory shock learning is a classical conditioning paradigm in which fruit flies associate a previously neutral odor with an aversive electric shock, providing a tractable model for studying learning and memory. During training, flies encounter two odors sequentially, with one paired with shock; later, their odor preference reveals whether they formed and retained the association. This behavior depends on olfactory circuits that convey odor information to the mushroom bodies and dopaminergic neurons that signal punishment, producing synaptic and behavioral changes. The paradigm supports controlled analysis of memory formation, retrieval, forgetting, and the neural effects of genes, drugs, and environmental conditions in neuroscience.
