Mate Preference Zones

Mate preference zones are brain regions or neural circuits that contribute to an animal’s attraction toward particular potential mates, linking mate choice to nervous system function. These circuits integrate sensory cues, internal hormonal state, and reward-related signals, changing neural activity and guiding behaviors such as approach, courtship, and partner selection. In neuroscience, studying mate preference zones helps researchers examine how the brain converts social information into motivated behavior and how experience, reproductive condition, or species-specific traits shape preference. This work also clarifies the neural basis of social bonding, sexual selection, and behavioral variation across individuals and species.

This protocol outlines the use of spectrophotometry to detect ultraviolet-reflecting structures on organisms (in this example, the sailfin molly Poecilia latipinna) and describes dichotomous choice tests for fish that allow inferences to be made on the role of ultraviolet cues during mate selection.

Natural Selection and Mating Preferences

2024

The principle of natural selection posits that organisms better adapted to their environment are more likely to survive and reproduce. This principle is closely intertwined with mating preferences, a key aspect of sexual selection, which evolutionary psychologists believe is driven by instincts to propagate one's genes. Such instincts significantly influence mating behaviors and preferences between genders. Females, due to their biological roles in conception, pregnancy, and nursing, inherently...

Sexual Selection Class Simulation ExpandNote: In this activity, you and your classmates will portray a sexually reproducing population consisting of an equal number of male and female animals. You will simulate several different mating scenarios to determine how relative quality, attractiveness, sex, and parental commitment affect mate choice and reproductive success. The goal of this activity is to maximize your progeny. Hypotheses: There are several overall hypotheses for female and male...

Choosing Mates Evolutionary fitness is largely determined by the ability of an organism to survive and successfully produce offspring. Critical to this process is sexual selection, which plays a large role in the determination of mating pairs, and thus which genes are passed on to the next generation. Often, intense competition for mates within a population places selective pressure on traits related to courtship and copulation. Natural selection that results from these pressures is called...
