Ophthalmology

Ophthalmology is the branch of medicine concerned with the eyes, visual system, and disorders that impair vision, combining clinical diagnosis, prevention, and treatment. In ophthalmic pharmacology, drugs act on ocular tissues through mechanisms such as receptor activation or blockade, modulation of inflammation, reduction of intraocular pressure, and control of infection; delivery may use topical drops, injections, or systemic administration. These principles support therapies for glaucoma, uveitis, retinal disease, dry eye, and ocular infections, while pharmacokinetic barriers such as the cornea and blood-retinal barrier influence drug absorption and duration. Understanding these interactions guides safer, more effective treatment and informs development of targeted ocular medicines.

This protocol describes how high-resolution imaging techniques such as spectral domain optical coherence tomography and scanning laser ophthalmoscopy can be utilized in small rodents, using an ophthalmic imaging platform system, to obtain information on retinal thickness and microglial cell distribution, respectively.

Glutamate and Hypoxia as a Stress Model for the Isolated Perfused Vertebrate Retina

With this study, we introduce a standardized stress model for the isolated superfused bovine retina for future preclinical therapeutic testing. The effect of either hypoxia (pure N2) or glutamate stress (250 µM glutamate) on retinal function represented by a- and b-wave amplitudes was evaluated.

A Mouse Model of Retinal Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury Through Elevation of Intraocular Pressure

This article describes a procedure for inducing retinal ischemia-reperfusion injury by elevated intraocular pressure in mice. Retinal ischemia-reperfusion injury by elevated intraocular pressure serves to model human pathologies characterized by compromised oxygen and nutrient delivery in the retina, enabling researchers to examine potential cellular mechanisms and treatments for human diseases of the retinal neurovascular unit.

Scleral Cross-linking Using Riboflavin and Ultraviolet-A Radiation for Prevention of Axial Myopia in a Rabbit Model

We demonstrate the effect of scleral crosslinking with riboflavin and UVA on an axial elongation rabbit eye. Axial elongation was induced in 13 day-old New Zealand rabbits (male and female) by suturing their right eye eyelids (tarsorrhaphy).
