Vibrational Motion

Vibrational motion is the repeated back-and-forth movement of an object or system around a stable equilibrium position, forming a foundation for understanding oscillations in physics. It occurs when a restoring force drives the system toward equilibrium while inertia carries it past that position; for small displacements, this interaction often produces simple harmonic motion with a characteristic amplitude, period, and frequency. Vibrational motion describes the behavior of masses on springs, pendulums, atoms in molecules, and components of mechanical systems. Analyzing these oscillations helps explain waves, sound, resonance, energy transfer, and the design of structures and instruments that must control or exploit vibration.

A protocol is presented for the characterization of the in-field pedestrian behavior and the simulation of the resulting structural response. Field-tests demonstrate that the in situ identified pacing rate and synchronization rate among the participants constitute an essential input for the simulation and verification of the human-induced loads.

Vibrating Concrete

2024

Mechanical vibrators are instrumental in compacting newly poured concrete within formwork and around reinforcements. This process is essential to eliminate trapped air pockets and establish a dense concrete mass. One widely used method is vibrating by internal vibrators, often referred to as a poker vibrator or immersion vibrator. It is rapidly inserted through the full depth of the freshly laid concrete and slightly extends into the layer below it (which remains in a plastic state). Consistent...

Source: Ketron Mitchell-Wynne, PhD, Asantha Cooray, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, School of Physical Sciences, University of California, Irvine, CA This experiment demonstrates the kinematics of motion in 1 and 2 dimensions. This lab will begin by studying motion in 1 dimension, under constant acceleration, by launching a projectile directly upward and measuring the maximum height reached. This lab will verify that the maximum height reached is consistent with the kinematic...
