Question 1

What is marginal product and how is it calculated?

Accepted Answer

Marginal product refers to the additional output produced by using one extra unit of input while keeping other inputs constant. In the short run, when labor is the variable input, marginal product of labor is calculated as MPL = ΔQ / ΔL, where ΔQ is the change in total output and ΔL is the change in labor input. This metric helps firms understand how much additional output each new worker contributes.

Question 2

Why does marginal product of labor eventually decrease?

Accepted Answer

Marginal product of labor decreases due to the law of diminishing marginal returns. As more workers are added to fixed inputs like ovens, each additional worker becomes less productive. Workers may have to wait for equipment or experience overcrowding, reducing individual efficiency. Eventually, the fixed capital cannot support additional workers effectively, causing marginal product to decline.

Question 3

How does a bakery example illustrate marginal product stages?

Accepted Answer

A bakery with a fixed number of ovens demonstrates marginal product in three stages. Initially, additional workers significantly increase daily bread output by efficiently using available ovens. As more workers are hired, marginal product begins declining because workers must share equipment and space. Eventually, overcrowding and equipment constraints severely limit each new worker's contribution to output.

Question 4

What is the law of diminishing marginal returns?

Accepted Answer

The law of diminishing marginal returns states that as additional units of a variable input are added to fixed inputs, the marginal product of the variable input will eventually decrease. In the short run with fixed capital, employing more labor initially increases output significantly, but after a certain point, each additional worker contributes less to total production due to capacity constraints.

Question 5

How do fixed and variable inputs affect marginal product?

Accepted Answer

Marginal product measures the output change from adding one unit of a variable input while holding other inputs constant. In the short run, labor is typically variable while capital remains fixed. The fixed inputs limit how productively additional labor can be employed. When fixed inputs cannot accommodate more workers, marginal product declines as workers compete for limited equipment and space.

Question 6

What happens when too many workers are added to a fixed workspace?

Accepted Answer

When too many workers are added to a fixed workspace with limited equipment, marginal product falls due to inefficiency and congestion. Workers experience longer wait times to use ovens or machinery, reducing their individual output contribution. Overcrowding creates coordination problems and reduces overall productivity, demonstrating why firms cannot indefinitely increase output by simply hiring more labor.

Question 7

Why is marginal product important for short-run production decisions?

Accepted Answer

Marginal product helps firms determine optimal labor levels in the short run when capital is fixed. By calculating how much additional output each new worker produces, firms can decide whether hiring another employee justifies the wage cost. Understanding marginal product trends allows managers to identify the point where diminishing returns begin and avoid inefficient overstaffing.
