Question 1

What are the two main surveys the Bureau of Labor Statistics uses to measure employment?

Accepted Answer

The Bureau of Labor Statistics relies on the Current Population Survey (CPS), a household survey, and the Current Employment Statistics survey (CES), an establishment survey. The CPS collects data from households to capture total employment, while the CES gathers data from over 100,000 businesses to provide industry-specific employment trends and payroll information.

Question 2

How does the CES collect employment data from businesses?

Accepted Answer

The Current Employment Statistics survey collects data primarily through telephone interviews and online reporting from participating businesses. This data includes the number of employees on payrolls, average weekly hours, average weekly earnings, average hourly earnings, and the number of women employees, providing detailed metrics across industry sectors.

Question 3

Why do the CPS and CES sometimes report different employment figures?

Accepted Answer

The CPS and CES measure different employment populations. The CPS includes self-employed individuals, such as a doctor running her own clinic, while the CES only counts workers on business payrolls. Because they capture different groups, the surveys may yield different employment estimates, but together they provide a comprehensive picture of the labor market.

Question 4

What specific employment metrics does the CES provide?

Accepted Answer

The Current Employment Statistics survey provides estimates of payroll employment, average weekly hours, average weekly earnings, average hourly earnings, and the number of women employees. The CES also delivers detailed employment trends across industry sectors such as retail, education, and construction, making it valuable for analyzing labor market changes by industry.

Question 5

Which survey is better for calculating the unemployment rate?

Accepted Answer

The Current Population Survey (CPS) is better suited for calculating the unemployment rate because it captures the total number of unemployed people by surveying households. In contrast, the Current Employment Statistics survey focuses on payroll employment and industry trends, providing a more precise measure of jobs by sector rather than unemployment levels.

Question 6

How many businesses participate in the CES survey?

Accepted Answer

The Current Employment Statistics survey collects data from over 100,000 businesses throughout the United States. Most data collection occurs through telephone interviews or online reporting, allowing the BLS to gather comprehensive payroll and employment information across diverse industry sectors and geographic regions.

Question 7

What makes the CES particularly useful for analyzing labor market trends?

Accepted Answer

The CES provides timely, detailed employment data by industry sector, including retail, education, and construction. Because it surveys over 100,000 business establishments and collects metrics like payroll employment, weekly hours, and earnings, it offers precise industry-specific employment trends that help economists and policymakers understand labor market dynamics across different sectors.
