Comovement, recurrence, and persistence are features of business cycles.
Comovement means that many economic variables and sectors usually move together over the business cycle.
For example, during a period of expansion, factories typically produce more cars, stores hire more workers, and restaurants get more customers.
Business cycles are recurrent, which means expansions and contractions happen again and again over time. Cycles recur, but they are not periodic.
Lastly, persistence means that once a phase begins—whether it’s an expansion or a contraction—it usually continues for some time.
Sometimes the contraction can be long. For example, the Great Depression in the United States during the 1930s lasted for several years. But the dot-com recession in 2001 lasted only eight months.
Economists study these features to better understand business cycles over time.
