IR peak intensity depends on how much a bond’s dipole moment changes during vibration. When infrared light passes through a molecule, absorption happens only when a stretching or bending motion causes a substantial change in that bond dipole moment. That is what makes a molecule infrared active. Vibrational transitions usually fall in the infrared region from 4000 to 400 cm-1.

Molecular bonds can stretch and bend in different ways, so an IR spectrum shows peaks with different intensities. The dipole moment is the electric field tied to a bond. One way to picture it is as two opposite charges connected by a spring. If the distance between those charges changes, the dipole moment changes too. Large dipole moment changes give strong peaks. Small changes give weak peaks.

The oscillating electric field of the IR light acts like an antenna for absorption. A carbonyl C=O bond usually gives a stronger signal than a C=C bond because its stretching vibration causes a larger dipole moment change. Peak intensity also depends on sample concentration and on the number of IR-active bonds present. As concentration increases, peak intensity increases. Symmetrical bonds are generally inefficient at IR absorption.
