Relative Frequency Distribution

relative frequency in data tables

Relative frequency distribution shows how often each value or class appears in a data set as a fraction of the whole. To find a relative frequency, divide each class frequency by the total number of data points in the sample. The result can be written as a fraction, decimal, or percent.

This type of distribution is very similar to a regular frequency distribution. The same data are grouped in classes, and the same rules are used to build those classes. The main difference is in the way the results are reported.

A regular frequency distribution lists the number of data values in each class. A relative frequency distribution lists the proportion of data values in each class instead. On a graph, the y-axis shows relative frequency rather than simple frequency. Relative frequency distributions are often shown with histograms and frequency polygons.
