Scatter Plot

שקול נתונים כמותיים על מחירי הבתים ואת שטח הקרקע המתאים שלהם. נתונים כמותיים כאלה עם שני משתנים נקראים נתונים דו-משתניים. 
המשתנה הפועל כגורם נקרא המשתנה הבלתי תלוי, ואילו משתנה אחר המציג את התגובה נקרא המשתנה התלוי. 
תלות זו של משתנה אחד על פני השני ניתן להמחיש באמצעות תרשים הפיזור. כאן, המשתנה הבלתי תלוי – שטח הקרקע – מיוצג לאורך ציר X, והמשתנה התלוי – מחיר הבתים – מיוצג לאורך ציר Y. 
סמן את המחירים המתאימים לאזור הקרקע. לאחר מכן, צייר את קו ההתאמה הטובה ביותר כך שמספר כמעט שווה של נקודות נמצא מעל ומתחת לקו זה. נקודות אלה יחד יוצרות את התבנית לזיהוי המתאם בין שני המשתנים.

reading relationships in a scatter plot

A scatter plot shows the relationship between two variables, x and y. It is one of the easiest ways to display how the variables are connected. The graph can show the direction of the relationship. It can also show whether the points suggest a clear pattern or little pattern at all.

A clear direction appears when high values of one variable go with high values of the other variable. It can also appear when low values of one variable go with low values of the other variable. Another pattern happens when high values of one variable go with low values of the other variable. These patterns help show whether the variables move together or in opposite ways.

The strength of the relationship comes from how close the points are to a line or another function. The points may cluster near a line, a power function, an exponential function, or some other type of function. For a linear relationship, there is one important exception. If all the points fall on a horizontal line, that &quot;perfect fit&quot; actually shows no relationship.

When reading a scatterplot, the overall pattern matters most. It is also important to notice any deviations, if there are any. This helps you judge both the direction and the strength of the relationship more accurately.
