מערכת הנשימה מסלקת פחמן דו חמצני מהדם הזורם וסופגת במהירות חמצן מהאטמוספרה בהתאם לצרכי הגוף, גם במהלך אימון אקסטרים.

 סקירה כללית של מערכת הנשימה והפקת אנרגיה
 ייצור האנרגיה בגוף האדם מופעל בעיקר על ידי חמצון, תהליך שבו מולקולות מזון נשרפות על ידי שילוב עם חמצן לייצור פחמן דו חמצני ומים. תהליך חילוף חומרים חיוני זה מקיים חיים, ונתמך באופן מורכב על ידי מערכת הנשימה.

 מבנה ותפקוד מערכת הנשימה:
 מערכת הנשימה היא רשת מורכבת של מבנים הכוללת את האף, אורופארינקס, הגרון, קנה הנשימה, הסימפונות, הסימפונות והריאות. האוויר עובר מהאף והפה אל הגרון (לוע) ולאחר מכן דרך תיבת הקול או הגרון. האפיגלוטיס, דש מדהים של רקמה, שומר על כניסת הגרון, ומונע ממזון ונוזל לחדור לדרכי הנשימה במהלך הבליעה.

The respiratory system supports energy production by bringing oxygen into the body and removing carbon dioxide. In human cells, oxidation uses food molecules and oxygen to produce carbon dioxide and water. This process helps sustain life and depends on the respiratory system.

Air moves through a pathway that includes the nose, oropharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, and lungs. Air enters through the nose and mouth, passes through the pharynx, and then moves through the larynx, which is the voice box. The epiglottis is a flap of tissue that helps keep food and liquid out of the airways during swallowing.

The main job of the respiratory system is to deliver oxygen to body cells and remove carbon dioxide, which is a waste product of cellular metabolism. The lungs make this possible by supporting gas exchange between the air and the circulatory system. This exchange is essential for keeping cells supplied with oxygen.

Three linked processes make this work: ventilation, diffusion, and perfusion. Ventilation, or breathing, is the movement of air in and out of the lungs. Diffusion is the spontaneous movement of gases between the alveoli, or air sacs, and the blood. Perfusion is the flow of blood through the alveolar capillaries, which keeps blood near the alveoli for efficient exchange.

Together, ventilation, diffusion, and perfusion move oxygen into the blood and carbon dioxide out for exhalation. This coordinated system supports cellular respiration and other metabolic processes throughout the body. The respiratory system is therefore vital for gas exchange, energy production, and life itself.
