ATR מבוסס על השתקפות פנימית כוללת, המתרחשת כאשר קרן אור עוברת מגביש, המייצג תווך צפוף מאוד, לתווך מדגם פחות צפוף בזווית גדולה מהזווית הקריטית.
בתהליך זה, הקרן חודרת מרחק קצר מעבר לגביש לתוך הדגימה, ויוצרת גל אוונסנטי. הדגימה בולעת קרינה קצרת מועד זו באורכי גל ספציפיים, וכתוצאה מכך הנחתת הקרן, המכונה החזרה כוללת מוחלשת.

ספקטרוסקופיית אינפרא-אדום בשיטת החזר כולל מוחלש (Attenuated Total Reflectance או ATR) היא טכניקה אנליטית עוצמתית המשמשת לחקר ההרכב של חומרים. שיטה זו נמצאת בשימוש נרחב בכימיה, מדעי החומרים, מדע פורנזי ותחומים נוספים שבהם נדרשת אפיון דגימות. לשיטת ATR ישנם יתרונות רבים על פני ספקטרוסקופיית IR מסורתית במעבר, כולל הצורך במעט או ללא הכנה מוקדמת של הדגימה והיכולת לנתח מגוון רחב של דגימות.

תהליך ה-ATR מתחיל בהכוונת קרן של קרינה אינפרא-אדומה אל גביש העשוי יהלום או גרמניום. מקדם השבירה הגבוה מוביל להחזר פנימי כולל של הקרן בתוך גביש ה-ATR. כאשר הקרן פוגעת בממשק שבין הגביש בעל מקדם השבירה הגבוה לדגימה בעלת מקדם השבירה הנמוך, נוצר גל כָּלֶה (evanescent wave המשתרע מעבר לפני השטח של הגביש אל תוך הדגימה. כאשר הגל הדועך מתקשר עם הדגימה, חלק מהאנרגיה של הגל נבלעת. עומק החדירה של גל זה לתוך הדגימה תלוי באורך הגל של האור הפוגע, בזווית הפגיעה ובמקדמי השבירה של הגביש והדגימה. האנרגיה הנבלעת מתאימה לתדרי הרטט של המולקולות בדגימה, ויוצרת ספקטרום בליעה ייחודי. לכל מולקולה יש שילוב ייחודי של רטטי קשרים והיא בולעת קרינה אינפרא-אדומה באורכי גל ייחודיים. השוואת ספקטרום הבליעה של הדגימה לספקטרה מוכרת מאפשרת לזהות את ההרכב המולקולרי של הדגימה.

ATR infrared spectroscopy is a method for identifying the composition of materials. It is used in chemistry, materials science, forensic science, and other areas where sample characterization is needed. The technique is useful because it usually needs little to no sample preparation and can be applied to many kinds of samples.

The process starts when infrared, or IR, radiation is directed onto a diamond or germanium crystal. Because this crystal has a high refractive index, the IR beam undergoes total internal reflection inside the ATR crystal. At the surface where the crystal meets the sample, an evanescent wave is formed. This wave extends just beyond the crystal surface and into the sample.

As the evanescent wave interacts with the sample, some of its energy is absorbed. The depth of this penetration depends on the wavelength of the incoming light, the angle of incidence, and the refractive indices of the crystal and sample. The absorbed energy matches the vibrational frequencies of molecules in the sample. This creates a unique absorption spectrum.

Each molecule has its own set of bond vibrations and absorbs IR light at specific wavelengths. By comparing the sample’s absorption spectrum with known spectra, scientists can help identify its molecular composition.
