Types of Building Stone

אבנים מגמטיות נוצרות מהתגבשות מגמה או לבה מוצקה. דוגמה לכך היא גרניט, הידוע בעמידותו ויכולת ההתנגדות שלו לבליה, מה שהופך אותו לאידיאלי לחלקי מבנים החשופים לתנאי מזג אוויר קשים.

Building stone is a natural construction material cut from rock deposits and shaped into the sizes needed for building work. It is grouped into three main rock types: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. Each group has different properties that make it useful for specific parts of a structure.

Igneous rocks form when magma or lava cools and solidifies. Granite is a common example. It is durable and resists weathering, so it works well in parts of buildings that face severe weather.

Sedimentary rocks form as sediments build up and are pressed together by water or by layers of material above them. Limestone and sandstone are common examples. They can range from strongly layered to more uniform, and they are often chosen for decorative details such as windowsills and lintels because they are easier to work with and look attractive.

Metamorphic rocks begin as igneous or sedimentary rocks and then change under intense heat and pressure. Slate splits easily into sheets, which makes it useful for roofing, paving, and wall facing. Marble can be polished and carved, so it is often used for wall panels, column facings, window stools, and flooring. Quartzite is often used as gravel or aggregate in concrete, while travertine is a type of limestone formed by mineral springs.

Some other stones are used in more specialized ways. These include alabaster, greenstone, schist, serpentine, and soapstone. Together, these building stones show how geology shapes both the strength and the appearance of construction materials.
