Steel bars in concrete structures help the material carry both compression and tension. Concrete is strong when it is squeezed, but it is weak when pulled. Rebar, or reinforcing steel bars, is placed inside the concrete to handle those tensile forces.

Steel is a practical choice because it has a similar coefficient of thermal expansion to concrete. That means both materials expand and contract in a similar way as temperature changes. The steel used for reinforcement is usually made by a hot-rolling process. Rebars are circular in cross-section, come in standard diameters and lengths, and have surface ribs that improve the bond with the concrete.

Rebars are also grouped into grades based on yield strength. In design, engineers calculate the best cross-sectional area of steel needed for a structure. They may use more small-diameter bars or fewer large-diameter bars, depending on the load and shape of the concrete member.

The layout of reinforcement also depends on concrete cover and spacing. Cover is the layer of concrete over the steel, and spacing must leave room for concrete aggregates to pass between the bars. Other reinforcement forms include stirrups and spiral reinforcements, which help maintain structural integrity. Fiber-reinforced concrete adds fibers, and ferrocement uses mesh. Both are examples of newer reinforcement methods that can improve durability and strength.
