Fiber-reinforced concrete is concrete that includes added fibers to improve strength and durability. It uses hydraulic cement with fine or coarse aggregates, plus separated, non-continuous fibers mixed through the material. These fibers can come from steel, glass, and polymers, as well as natural sources such as sisal and cellulose or manufactured sources such as polypropylene and Kevlar.

Steel fibers are often preferred because they are strong and tough. They help concrete resist cracking and improve ductility, which means the material can bend or stretch more before failing. Fiber-reinforced concrete also performs better after cracking than plain concrete, which fails when it reaches its ultimate flexural strength.

The amount of fiber in the mix helps classify this concrete. Fiber volume affects shrinkage cracking resistance, modulus of rupture, and impact resistance. The fibers themselves also matter. Their aspect ratio, shape, texture, and structure all influence how the concrete performs.

Mixing and handling methods change depending on the fiber type. Designers also consider modulus of elasticity and Poisson’s ratio, along with how well the material avoids large lateral stresses. Fiber-reinforced concrete is used in precast decorative panels, fire-resistant sheets, concrete overlays, permanent structures, and temporary formworks.
