את שיטת הדריכה ניתן ליישם בשתי דרכים: דריכת קדם ודריכת אחר. דריכת קדם מתבצעת לפני יציקת הבטון. גידי הפלדה נמתחים ומעוגנים כנגד תמיכות חיצוניות, ולאחר מכן יוצקים את הבטון סביבם. כשהבטון מתייבש ומגיע לחוזק הדרוש, משחררים את הגידים והמתח מועבר לדחוס את הבטון. שיטה זו נפוצה בייצור רכיבי בטון טרומיים, המיוצרים במפעל ומובאים לאתר הבנייה. דריכת אחר מתבצעת לאחר שהבטון כבר יצוק והתקשה. גידי הפלדה מושחלים דרך תעלות בבטון, ולאחר מכן נמתחים ומעוגנים כנגד הבטון עצמו. שיטה זו מאפשרת גמישות רבה יותר בבנייה, במיוחד עבור מבנים הנבנים באתר, כמו גשרים ומבנים גדולים.

Prestressed concrete is a construction method that preloads concrete so it can handle more stress. High-strength steel strands are stretched before or after the concrete is loaded in service. The goal is to put the concrete into compression. That compression helps balance the tension the structure will face later.

By reducing tension, prestressing helps limit cracks in the concrete. It can also let a structure carry greater loads or span longer distances than conventional reinforced concrete. These benefits come without increasing the amount of concrete or steel used. As a result, prestressed concrete can be stronger and more efficient than standard reinforced concrete.

There are two main ways to make prestressed concrete: pretensioning and posttensioning. Pretensioning happens before the concrete is cast. Steel strands are stretched and anchored against external abutments, then concrete is poured around them. After the concrete cures and gains enough strength, the strands are released, and the force is transferred to the concrete.

Pretensioning is often used for precast concrete elements. These parts are made in a factory and then transported to the construction site. Posttensioning happens after the concrete has been cast and hardened. In this method, steel tendons pass through ducts in the concrete, are tensioned, and are anchored against the concrete itself.

Posttensioning gives builders more flexibility, especially for structures made on-site. It is commonly used in bridges and buildings. Prestressed concrete is also used in tanks and slabs. In these structures, its lighter weight, higher strength, and improved durability are especially useful because cracks are minimized.
