A scale model of a dam spillway is used to study how water moves over the structure. These hydraulic models are often built at a 1:15 ratio. They help show flow speed, flow patterns, and energy dissipation, which is the loss of water energy as flow moves through the spillway.

Researchers use the model to watch how water behaves in a controlled setting. They can examine velocity distribution, wave formation, turbulence, and flow separation. These details help them see how the spillway performs and where the design may need changes to improve safety or flow efficiency.

A key part of the model is Froude number similarity. The Froude number compares the effects of gravity and inertia in flowing water. Keeping this similarity correct helps the model match free-surface flow behavior in the full-size spillway, including waves and surface motion.

The model also adjusts discharge rates, flow velocities, and timing. Discharge rate is the amount of water flowing through the system, and it is reduced by the scale factor so the tests stay safe and manageable. Time is also compressed, so conditions that would take a full day in the real spillway can be studied in just a few hours.

This kind of scaled testing makes it possible to try different flow conditions without using large amounts of water or long test runs. It gives engineers a faster way to check how the spillway responds under real-world conditions. The results help confirm that the full-scale structure will perform reliably and reveal possible weak points before construction or use.
