Dim Light Melatonin Onset

Dim Light Melatonin Onset (DLMO) is the clock time when melatonin begins to rise under controlled, low-light conditions, providing a practical marker of the human circadian rhythm. To measure it, researchers collect serial saliva or blood samples in dim light during the evening and identify the first sustained increase above an established threshold, while minimizing light-induced suppression of melatonin. In behavioral research, DLMO helps estimate an individual’s circadian phase and chronotype, assess sleep timing, and evaluate effects of shift work, jet lag, aging, or light-based interventions. Its timing can clarify misalignment between the internal clock and daily schedules.

This manuscript presents a unique in vitro model of immunopurified human villous cytotrophoblast cells cultured under hypoxia/reoxygenation. This model is suitable to study the protective effects of promising treatments, such as melatonin, on pregnancy complications associated with increased oxidative stress and altered placental function.

A protocol for stroke onset time estimation in a rat model of stroke exploiting quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (qMRI) parameters is described. The procedure exploits diffusion MRI for delineation of the acute stroke lesion and quantitative T1 and T2 (qT1 and qT2) relaxation times for timing of stroke.

Introduction to Light Microscopy

2023

The light microscope is an instrument used by researchers in many different fields to magnify specimens to as much as a thousand times their original size. In its simplest form, it is composed of a clear lens that magnifies the sample and a light source to illuminate it. However, most light microscopes are much more complex and house numerous fine-tuned lenses with tightly controlled dimensions all within the body of the microscope itself and in components such as the objectives and eyepieces.

The Wave Nature of Light

2020

The nature of light has been a subject of inquiry since antiquity. In the seventeenth century, Isaac Newton performed experiments with lenses and prisms and was able to demonstrate that white light consists of the individual colors of the rainbow combined together. Newton explained his optics findings in terms of a "corpuscular" view of light, in which light was composed of streams of extremely tiny particles traveling at high speeds according to Newton's laws of motion. Others in the...
