Interfacial Retention

Interfacial retention is the persistence of molecules, particles, cells, or biomaterials at the boundary between two phases, such as a fluid and a solid or two immiscible fluids. It occurs when adsorption, surface interactions, wetting, or physical confinement counteracts diffusion, desorption, and transport away from the interface. In bioengineering, interfacial retention helps control how therapeutic agents remain localized, how cells attach to scaffolds, and how biomaterials interact with tissues or biological fluids. Understanding these processes supports the design of coatings, drug-delivery systems, tissue-engineering constructs, and diagnostic platforms with improved stability, localization, and performance.

Interfacial Electrochemical Methods: Overview

2024

Interfacial electrochemical methods focus on the phenomena occurring at the boundary between an electrode and a solution, as opposed to bulk methods that concentrate on the solution's overall properties. These interfacial methods are classified as either static or dynamic based on the presence of a nonzero current in the electrochemical cell and the consistency of analyte concentrations. Static methods, such as potentiometry, measure the cell's potential without any significant current passing...

Composite Scaffolds of Interfacial Polyelectrolyte Fibers for Temporally Controlled Release of Biomolecules

Scaffolds for tissue engineering need to recapitulate the complex biochemical and biophysical microenvironment of the cellular niche. Here, we show the use of interfacial polyelectrolyte complexation fibers as a platform to create composite, multi-component polymeric scaffolds with sustained biochemical release.

Soil Core Sample Collection for Water Retention Property Analysis

Source:Alessia J. Marchesan1, Guillermo Hernandez Ramirez11Renewable Resources, University of Alberta. This video demonstrates the technique for collecting a soil sample for hydraulic property analysis. The sampling area is cleared, and the top crust is evacuated. The sampling ring is then placed into the soil to collect the sample. The ring with the sample is then cleaned, labeled, packed, and transferred undisturbed for analysis.

Our goals were to design, manufacture and test ferromagnetic stents for endothelial cell capture. Ten stents were tested for fracture and 10 more stents were tested for retained magnetism. Finally, 10 stents were tested in-vitro and 8 more stents were implanted in 4 pigs to show cell capture and retention.
