Rat Walking Behavior

Rat walking behavior is the study of how rats coordinate posture, limb movement, balance, and locomotion during purposeful movement, making it a useful model for understanding animal biology and motor control. Walking depends on interactions among the brain, spinal cord, sensory systems, muscles, and joints, which regulate alternating limb placement and adjust gait in response to speed, surface, and environmental cues. Researchers analyze measures such as stride length, paw placement, walking speed, and coordination to assess nervous system function, movement disorders, and recovery after injury. These observations also support studies of biomechanics, behavior, and the effects of drugs or experimental treatments on locomotion.
