Stomatogastric Nervous System

The stomatogastric nervous system (STNS) is a compact neural network that controls rhythmic movements of the foregut in crustaceans, making it a powerful model for studying how nervous systems generate behavior. Its stomatogastric ganglion contains identified motor neurons and interneurons connected by excitatory and inhibitory synapses; central pattern-generating circuits produce coordinated rhythms, while sensory and neuromodulatory inputs adjust their timing and strength. These circuits organize chewing, filtering, and food-pumping movements and can continue producing patterned activity under controlled experimental conditions. Because individual neurons and connections can be characterized precisely, the STNS supports research on motor control, network flexibility, synaptic plasticity, and neuromodulation.

The nervous system coordinates body functions through its complex network of nerve cells, enabling sensation and movement. It is divided into two primary parts: the central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS). The CNS is composed of the brain and the spinal cord. The brain acts as the body's control center, processing sensory information and coordinating responses. The spinal cord functions as a major signaling pathway for the brain and the rest of the body.
