Subsurface Heterogeneity Assessment

Subsurface heterogeneity assessment is the characterization of spatial and depth-dependent variation in underground environments, including differences in soil structure, moisture, chemistry, and biological activity. It works by combining depth-resolved sampling with physical, chemical, and biological measurements to map gradients and identify how microscale conditions vary across a subsurface system. In biology, this approach links habitat variability to the distribution and activity of roots, microorganisms, and other organisms, helping researchers explain differences in nutrient cycling, decomposition, and ecosystem function. The resulting profiles support improved experimental design, ecological modeling, and evaluation of how subsurface communities respond to environmental change.

Three-dimensional (3D) reflection seismology is a powerful method for imaging subsurface volcanoes. By using industrial 3D seismological data from the Tarim Basin, we illustrate how to extract the sills and the conduits of subsurface volcanoes from seismic data cubes.

This method aims at locating vertical subsurface defects. Here, we couple a laser with a spatial light modulator and trigger its video input to heat a sample surface deterministically with two anti-phased modulated lines while acquiring highly resolved thermal images. The defect position is retrieved from evaluating thermal wave interference minima.

A protocol for the design and construction of a soil tank interfaced to a small climate controlled wind tunnel to study the effects of atmospheric forcings on evaporation is presented. Both the soil tank and wind tunnel are instrumented with sensor technologies for the continuous in situ measurement of environmental conditions.

Heterogeneous Catalysis

2026

Heterogeneous catalysis involves a catalyst in a different phase from the reactants. It is a process where the catalyst and the reactants are in distinct phases, typically solid and gas or liquid. Most heterogeneous catalysts are metals, metal oxides, or acids. The list includes transition metals like iron (Fe), cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni), palladium (Pd), platinum (Pt), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), tungsten (W), silver (Ag), and copper (Cu). These metals possess partially vacant d orbitals that...

HKUST-1 as a Heterogeneous Catalyst for the Synthesis of Vanillin

The conversion of trans-ferulic acid to vanillin was achieved by heterogeneous catalysis. HKUST-1 was employed in this synthesis and the essential step in the catalytic process was the generation of unsaturated metal sites. Thus, when the catalyst was activated under vacuum, full vanillin conversion (yield of 95%) was obtained.
