Arc Melting Procedure

Arc melting is a materials-synthesis technique that uses an electric arc to produce intense, localized heat for melting metals, alloys, or reactive elements. In a typical procedure, the starting materials are placed on a water-cooled copper hearth and melted under an inert atmosphere, such as argon, which limits oxidation and contamination; repeated melting can improve compositional uniformity. The resulting solidified button supports the preparation of intermetallic compounds, high-temperature alloys, and other air-sensitive materials for chemical and materials research. By enabling rapid melting with controlled atmospheric conditions, arc melting helps researchers investigate composition, phase formation, and structure–property relationships.

Source: Vy M. Dong and Jan Riedel, Department of Chemistry, University of California, Irvine, CA One of the most important properties of a crystalline solid is its melting point. It can be used to determine the purity of a known compound and gives important information about the stability of the formed crystals.

Melting Points in Organic Chemistry The melting point of a compound is the temperature at which the solid phase transitions into the liquid phase at a standard pressure of 1 atmosphere. The melting point of a compound is a physical property, like solubility, density, color, and electronegativity that can be used to identify a compound. Determining the exact temperature at which a compound begins to melt is a challenging task; because of this, the melting point of compounds is reported as a...

Arc Length Function

2026

The arc length function represents the total distance traveled along a smooth curve measured from a fixed starting point to a variable endpoint. For curves that are continuous and differentiable, arc length provides a precise way to quantify distance when straight-line approximations are insufficient. To derive arc length, the curve is divided into many small segments. Each segment is approximated by a straight line whose length depends on the horizontal and vertical changes over that interval.
