Branched Polymers

Branched polymers are macromolecules composed of repeating units arranged in a main chain with side chains, creating architectures that differ from linear polymers in shape, packing, and flow behavior. Branching forms when polymerization connects growing chains through multifunctional monomers or chain-transfer reactions, and the number, length, and location of branches determine properties such as molecular weight distribution, viscosity, crystallinity, and mechanical response. In chemistry, controlling polymer branching enables researchers to tailor materials for packaging, coatings, adhesives, elastomers, and biomedical systems. Studying these structures also clarifies how molecular architecture governs processing performance and the design of advanced polymeric materials.

The word polymer is derived from the Greek words “poly” which means “many” and “mer” which means “parts”. Polymers are long chains of molecules composed of repeating units of smaller molecules, known as monomers. They either occur naturally, such as DNA and proteins, or can be constructed synthetically, like plastics. They have varied structural characteristics, such as linear chains, branched chains, or complex networks, that contribute to the properties that they exhibit. Additionally,...

In this video, we describe a qualitative spectrophotometric assay to determine the extent of branching in a glycogen sample with an uncharacterized structure. Comparing the absorbance maxima of the uncharacterized sample with that of polysaccharides with known branched structures indicates the presence of branching in the uncharacterized sample.

Financial accounting is essential for recording and reporting an organization's financial transactions. Statements like the balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow statement provide a clear picture of the financial position. These reports are mainly used by external stakeholders such as investors, creditors, regulatory authorities, and tax officials to make informed decisions. The importance of financial accounting lies in its ability to ensure transparency, compliance with legal...

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA Polymeric materials are widely used in civil structures, with uses ranging from very soft sealants to more rigid pipes in water and wastewater systems. The most basic definition of a polymer is a molecular structure with repeating subunits. The term polymer comes from Greek, where "poly" means many, and "-mer" means basic unit. Monomers, or single mers, are the specific repeating units. With...

Here, we describe protocols for the preparation of trans-cyclobutane fused cyclooctenes (tCBCO), their polymerization to prepare depolymerizable olefinic polymers, and the depolymerization of these polymers under mild conditions. Additionally, protocols for the preparation of depolymerizable networks and compression molding of rigid linear plastics based on this system are described.
