Mohr Method

The Mohr method is an argentometric precipitation titration used to determine halide concentrations, especially chloride and bromide, in aqueous samples. During the analysis, a sample is titrated with standard silver nitrate, causing the target halide to precipitate as silver halide; after the halide is consumed, excess silver ions react with chromate indicator to form brick-red silver chromate, marking the endpoint. The method requires near-neutral conditions because strongly acidic or alkaline solutions can affect the chromate indicator and precipitates. It provides a straightforward approach for analyzing chloride in water, food, and chemical samples, supporting quality control and environmental monitoring.

Mohr's Circle for Moments of Inertia: Problem Solving

2025

Mohr's circle is a graphical method for determining an area's principal moments by plotting the moments and product of inertia on a rectangular coordinate system. This circle can also be used to calculate the orientation of the principal axes. Consider a rectangular beam. The moments of inertia of the beam about the x and y axis are 2.5(107) mm4 and 7.5(107) mm4, respectively. The product of inertia is 1.5(107) mm4. Determine the principal moments of inertia and the orientation of the major and...

Mohr's Circle for Plane Stress

2024

Mohr's circle is a graphical method for identifying the state of stress at a point in a material, making it easier to analyze stress transformations under plane stress conditions. This two-dimensional technique visualizes both normal and shearing stresses on an element. Consider a set of Cartesian coordinates. The horizontal and vertical axes correspond to normal stress (σ) and shearing stress (τ), respectively. Two points, points A and B, are defined by the normal and shear stresses on the...

Mohr's Circle for Plane Strain

2025

Mohr's circle is a crucial graphical method used to analyze plane strain by plotting strain on a set of cartesian coordinates, where the abscissa is normal strain ∈ and the ordinate is shear strain γ. Similarly to Mohr’s circle for plane stress, two points X and Y are plotted. Their coordinates are (∈x, -γXY) and (∈Y, γXY), respectively. Mohr's circle visually represents the strain states under various conditions, which is essential for understanding material behavior. The center of Mohr's...

Mohr's Circle for Moments of Inertia

Mohr's circle is a graphical method to determine an area's principal moments of inertia by plotting the moments and product of inertia on a rectangular coordinate system. The center of Mohr's circle is obtained by averaging the moments of inertia about the x and y-axis. Its radius is determined from the moments and products of inertia. The intersection points between this circle and the horizontal axis gives the value of the principal moments of inertia. The product of inertia is zero at...

Methods of Sterilization I: Physical Methods

2025

As used in a healthcare facility, sterilization destroys all microorganisms through physical or chemical methods. The physical method includes steam, dry heat, boiling water, and radiation. Steam sterilization uses non-toxic, low-cost moist heat in the form of saturated steam under pressure, which is fast, microbicidal, and sporicidal, and quickly warms and penetrates fabrics. Autoclaves, or steam sterilizers, expose each item to direct steam contact for a predetermined time at the necessary...
