Molecular Shape

Molecular shape is the three-dimensional arrangement of atoms in a molecule, a structure that strongly influences its polarity, reactivity, and physical properties. In chemistry, molecular geometry is predicted by considering electron-domain repulsion around a central atom: bonding pairs and lone pairs arrange themselves to minimize repulsive forces, while bond lengths and multiple bonds further affect the observed shape. Common geometries include linear, trigonal planar, tetrahedral, and bent structures. Understanding molecular shape helps explain intermolecular interactions, solubility, spectroscopy, reaction behavior, and biological recognition, making it essential for interpreting molecular models and designing chemicals with desired properties.

Molecular Shape and Polarity

Dipole Moment of a Molecule Polar covalent bonds connect two atoms with differing electronegativities, leaving one atom with a partial positive charge (δ+) and the other atom with a partial negative charge (δ–), as the electrons are pulled toward the more electronegative atom. This separation of charge gives rise to a bond dipole moment. The magnitude of a bond dipole moment is represented by the Greek letter mu (µ) and is given by the formula shown here, where Q is the magnitude of the...

Molecules have characteristic shapes that are crucial for their function. The arrangement of various electron groups around the central atom dictates their molecular geometry. Electron pairs in the valence shell of a central atom will adopt an arrangement that minimizes repulsions between the electron pairs by maximizing the distance between them. The valence electrons form either bonding pairs, located primarily between bonded atoms, or lone pairs. Two regions of electron density in a diatomic...

Overview of VSEPR Theory Valence shell electron-pair repulsion theory (VSEPR theory) enables us to predict the molecular structure, including approximate bond angles around a central atom, of a molecule from an examination of the number of bonds and lone electron pairs in its Lewis structure. The VSEPR model assumes that electron pairs in the valence shell of a central atom will adopt an arrangement that minimizes repulsions between these electron pairs by maximizing the distance between them.

Controlling the Size, Shape and Stability of Supramolecular Polymers in Water

The goal of this experiment is to determine and control the size, shape and stability of self-assembled discotic amphiphiles in water. For aqueous based supramolecular polymers such level of control is very difficult. We apply a strategy using both repulsive and attractive interactions. The experimental techniques applied to characterize this system are broadly applicable.
