Nitrogen Gas Adsorption

Nitrogen gas adsorption is an analytical method that characterizes a solid’s surface area and pore structure by measuring how nitrogen molecules accumulate on its surface. Typically performed near liquid-nitrogen temperature, the method relies on physical adsorption, in which nitrogen molecules interact with surface sites and progressively form monolayers or multilayers as pressure increases. An adsorption isotherm records this relationship between pressure and adsorbed gas quantity, while models such as the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) equation estimate specific surface area. Further analysis provides pore volume and pore-size information, supporting the evaluation of catalysts, porous materials, powders, and adsorbents in chemistry and materials research.

A protocol for high-temperature and high-pressure gas adsorption measurements on zeolite H-ZSM-5 using an adsorption measurement device based on a langatate crystal microbalance is presented. Prior to the adsorption measurements, the synthesis of zeolite H-ZSM-5 on the langatate crystal microbalance sensor by the steam-assisted crystallization (SAC) method is demonstrated.

The Nitrogen Cycle

2019

Nitrogen atoms, present in all proteins and DNA, are recycled between abiotic and biotic components of the ecosystem. However, the primary form of nitrogen on Earth is nitrogen gas, which cannot be used by most animals and plants. Thus, nitrogen gas must first be converted into a usable form by nitrogen-fixing bacteria before it can be cycled through other living organisms. The use of nitrogen-containing fertilizers and animal waste products in human agriculture has greatly influenced the...

With solar energy as the driving force, a novel adsorption refrigeration system has been developed and experimentally investigated. Water vapor and zeolite formed the working pair of the adsorption system. This manuscript describes the setup of the experimental rig, the operation procedure, and the important results.

Carbon and Nitrogen Analysis of Environmental Samples

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University Elemental Analysis is a method used to determine elemental composition of a material. In environmental samples such as soils, scientists are particularly interested in the amounts of two ecologically important elements, nitrogen and carbon. Elemental analysis by the flash combustion technique works by oxidizing the sample with a catalyst through combustion in a high-temperature chamber. The products of combustion are...
