Ph Dependent Extraction

pH-dependent extraction is a chemical separation method in which a compound’s distribution between two phases changes with solution pH, enabling selective isolation of acidic or basic substances. An aqueous sample is adjusted with acid or base to control analyte ionization; neutral forms often partition into an organic solvent, while charged forms remain more soluble in water. By selecting an appropriate pH and solvent system, chemists can separate compounds with different acid-base properties, improve sample purification, and concentrate analytes for identification or measurement. The method is widely useful in analytical chemistry, pharmaceutical preparation, and the processing of complex chemical mixtures.

Source: Laboratory of Jeff Salacup - University of Massachusetts Amherst The distribution of a group of organic biomarkers called glycerol-dialkyl glycerol-tetraethers (GDGTs), produced by a suite of archaea and bacteria, were found in modern sediments to change in a predictable manner in response to air or water temperature1,2. Therefore, the distribution of these biomarkers in a sequence of sediments of known age can be used to reconstruct the evolution of air and/or water temperature on...

Extraction Extraction is a common technique used in organic chemistry to isolate a target compound. In the extraction process, a solute is transferred from one phase to another to separate it from unreacted starting materials or impurities. Extraction is also used to facilitate the isolation of a solute from a reaction solvent that is difficult to remove by evaporation, such as a solvent with a high boiling point. Generally, there are three types of extractions. First, in solid-liquid...

Chemical Kinetics and the Reaction Rate Law Chemical kinetics refers to the rate or speed of a chemical reaction. The rate depends on the mechanism, complexity, and number of reactants in the reaction. Reactant concentration also plays a significant role in the rate of a reaction. The rate law quantifies this relationship through experimentation. Each reactant contributes to the speed of the reaction by a factor known as the reaction order. This factor can range from zero to two, and it depends...

Chemical Kinetics The reaction rate is the speed at which a chemical reaction occurs. The reaction rate is defined as the change in concentration of a component in the reaction with time. The speed of a reaction depends on several factors, including the concentration of reactants and the temperature at which the reaction is performed. Each reactant contributes to the speed of the reaction by a specific factor. This relationship is defined by the reaction rate law. Rate Law The rate law is an...
