Random Copolymer

A random copolymer is a polymer composed of two or more different monomer units arranged along a chain in an irregular, statistically distributed sequence. It forms when multiple monomers undergo a shared polymerization reaction, with their relative reactivities and concentrations influencing how frequently each unit becomes incorporated and determining the resulting composition. By combining distinct chemical functionalities within one macromolecule, random copolymers can balance properties such as flexibility, strength, thermal behavior, solubility, and chemical resistance. Chemists use them to tailor materials for coatings, adhesives, membranes, elastomers, biomedical systems, and other applications where a controlled combination of polymer characteristics is required.

The key steps of living anionic polymerization of phenyl glycidyl ether (PheGE) on methoxy-polyethylene glycol (mPEG-b-PPheGE) are described. The resulting block copolymer micelles (BCMs) were loaded with doxorubicin 14% (wt%) and sustained release of drug over 4 days under physiologically relevant conditions was obtained.

Herein we present a method to synthesize ligand-free cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanoparticles based on a unique sulfur copolymer. The sulfur copolymer operates as a high temperature solvent and a sulfur source during the nanoparticle synthesis and stabilizes the nanoparticles after the reaction.

Solid-state Graft Copolymer Electrolytes for Lithium Battery Applications

2013

Lithium ion batteries employ flammable and volatile organic electrolytes that are suitable for ambient temperature applications. A safer alternative to organic electrolytes are solid polymer batteries. Solid polymer batteries operate safely at high temperatures (>120 °C), thus making them applicable to high temperature applications such as deep oil drilling and hybrid electric vehicles. This paper will discuss (a) the polymer synthesis, (b) the polymer conduction mechanism, and (c) provide...

Characteristics and Nomenclature of Copolymers

2023

Copolymers are the products obtained from the polymerization of multiple monomer species. So, in a polymer chain itself, there can be multiple repeating units that come from different monomers. The process of synthesizing a polymer from different monomer species is called copolymerization. When two monomers are involved, the polymer is known as a bipolymer. Polymers with three and four monomers are termed terpolymers and quaterpolymers, respectively. Figure 1 depicts the copolymerization of...
