Salicylaldehyde

Salicylaldehyde is an aromatic aldehyde, specifically 2-hydroxybenzaldehyde, in which a hydroxyl group lies adjacent to an aldehyde group on a benzene ring. This arrangement enables intramolecular hydrogen bonding and gives the molecule distinctive reactivity, allowing its aldehyde group to undergo condensation with primary amines to form Schiff bases while the phenolic oxygen can coordinate metal ions. In chemistry, salicylaldehyde is therefore an important building block for synthesizing chelating ligands, metal complexes, heterocyclic compounds, and functional organic materials. Its coupled hydrogen-bonding and coordination behavior also makes it useful for studying molecular structure, reaction mechanisms, and responsive chemical systems.

Approximately half of all proteins contain metals and it is estimated that up to one third of all proteins rely on metal-containing active sites to function. Proteins that feature metals, called metalloproteins, play a vital role in a variety of cell functions that are necessary for life. Metalloproteins...
