Physical Assessment

Physical assessment is the systematic evaluation of a patient’s health status through observation, examination, and measurement, providing essential information for clinical decision-making. In a structured sequence, clinicians collect subjective and objective findings using techniques such as inspection, palpation, percussion, and auscultation, while assessing vital signs and relevant body systems. These findings help identify normal and abnormal patterns, recognize changes in a patient’s condition, establish priorities, and guide diagnostic testing and treatment. Accurate physical assessment also supports clinical communication, documentation, monitoring of outcomes, and early detection of complications across diverse healthcare settings.

Here, we present a protocol to assess physical activity intensity levels measured with indirect calorimetry and two accelerometers (on the right wrist and waist) during an incremental walking-jogging test (from 0.84 to 2.37 m/s) on an oval track. The results show differences among the physical intensity assessed through those methods.
