Archival Discovery

Archival discovery is the systematic process of locating, identifying, and evaluating historical records that preserve evidence of past activities, decisions, and technical knowledge. Researchers use catalogues, finding aids, metadata, keyword searches, and collection hierarchies to trace materials across archives, then assess provenance, context, and reliability before interpreting them. In engineering, archival discovery can reveal design drawings, laboratory notebooks, specifications, project reports, patents, and correspondence that document how technologies were developed and used. These sources support historical research, help recover overlooked contributions, inform conservation and restoration, and provide context for understanding how engineering practices, systems, and standards have changed over time.

Some researchers gain access to large amounts of data without interacting with a single research participant. Instead, they use existing records to answer various research questions. This type of research approach is known as archival research. Archival research relies on looking at past records or data sets to look for interesting patterns or relationships. For example, a researcher might access the academic records of all individuals who enrolled in college within the past ten years and...

2025

This article presents a suite of techniques for reconstructing fossil specimens using paper-resin composites. These composites are made by combining archival-grade paper with thermoplastic resins commonly used in fossil preparation laboratories. The resulting lightweight composites add long-term stability to specimens while retaining suitability for radiological analyses.

2023

Drug discovery is a multifaceted process involving extensive screening, testing, and optimization of lead compounds to identify potential new drugs for therapeutic use. It combines several approaches, including screening large numbers of natural products, chemical modification of known active molecules, identification of new drug targets, and rational design based on biological mechanisms and drug-receptor structure. These approaches are carried out in both academic research laboratories and...

2013

Human endogenous retroviruses (HERV), which occupy 8% of the human genome, retain scarce coding capacities but a hundred thousand long terminal repeats (LTRs). A custom Affymetrix microarray was designed to identify individual HERV locus expression and was used on prostate cancer tissues as a proof of concept for future clinical studies.
