Backsight Foresight

Backsight and foresight are fundamental staff readings in differential leveling, a surveying method used to determine elevation differences and establish reliable vertical control in engineering projects. A backsight is taken on a benchmark or point of known elevation to calculate the instrument height, while a foresight is taken on a point of unknown elevation; subtracting the foresight from the instrument height yields that point’s elevation. Repeating this sequence transfers elevations along a route and provides checks through closing measurements. The method supports construction layout, site grading, drainage design, road alignment, and monitoring settlement or other changes in ground level.

Hindsight bias leads you to believe that the event you just experienced was predictable, even though it really wasn’t. In other words, you knew all along that things would turn out the way they did.
