Behavioral Video

Behavioral video is the systematic recording and analysis of observable actions, movements, and interactions over time, providing measurable evidence of how people, animals, or engineered systems respond to specific conditions. The method combines controlled video capture with behavioral coding, motion tracking, or computer-vision analysis to identify events, quantify movement patterns, and relate behavior to environmental or experimental variables. In engineering, behavioral video supports human-machine interaction studies, robotics, usability testing, safety assessment, and evaluation of autonomous systems. By converting visual observations into structured data, it improves experimental reproducibility and helps researchers design technologies that respond more effectively to real-world behavior.

Measuring the impacts of environmental contaminants on fish behavior is often subjective and challenging particularly when dealing with sublethal endpoints. We describe methods including video technology to quantify swimming behavior of early life stage white sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus) during and after 96 hr acute exposures to various concentrations of copper.
