Cable Tension

Cable tension is the axial pulling force carried by a flexible cable, a fundamental concept in engineering structures and mechanical systems. Because cables resist tension but not compression or bending, applied loads are transferred along their length, while equilibrium, cable geometry, support conditions, and sag determine the tension magnitude and direction. Engineers calculate or measure tension to design suspension bridges, guy wires, elevators, cranes, rigging, and cable-driven mechanisms, where excessive force can cause failure and insufficient force can produce instability or excessive deflection. Understanding cable tension supports safe load distribution, structural efficiency, and reliable operation under static and dynamic conditions.

Cable: Problem Solving

When dealing with a cable that is fixed to two supports and subjected to uniform loading, it is crucial to determine the maximum tension in the cable. This process can be broken down into several key steps, as outlined below: Analyze the problem: Begin by understanding the given scenario and the conditions of the cable. Identify the supports, the type of loading, and any other relevant information. Determine the cable's shape equation: Use the principles of equilibrium and the cable's...

Tests of Hardened Concrete in Tension

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA In a previous laboratory focused on concrete in compression, we observed that concrete can withstand very large stresses under uniaxial compressive forces. However, the failures observed were not compressive failures but failures along shear planes where maximum tensile forces occur. Thus, it is important to understand the behavior of concrete in tension and particularly its maximum strength...

Tension is a force along the length of a medium, in particular, a force carried by a flexible medium, such as a rope or cable. The word "tension" comes from Latin, meaning "to stretch". Not coincidentally, the flexible cords that carry muscle forces to other parts of the body are called tendons. Any flexible connector, such as a string, rope, chain, wire, or cable, can exert pull only parallel to its length; so, a force carried by a flexible connector is a tension with a direction parallel to...

Cable Subjected to Its Own Weight

Overhead power transmission lines rely on cables to carry electricity across large distances. To ensure the stability and functionality of these lines, it is crucial to understand the shape and tension experienced by the cables under the influence of their weight. A generalized loading function is employed to analyze a cable subjected to its own weight. This function considers the force acting along the cable's arc length rather than its projected length, providing a more accurate...
