Dampened Formworks

Dampened formworks are temporary or reusable molds engineered with damping features that limit vibration and movement while a material is placed, compacted, or cured. By dissipating mechanical energy through compliant interfaces, dampers, or energy-absorbing materials, they reduce oscillation and help maintain the form’s geometry under dynamic loading. In construction engineering, this control can support more consistent concrete placement, improve dimensional accuracy and surface finish, and reduce defects caused by mold motion. Dampened formworks are especially relevant where mechanical vibration, fluid pressure, or nearby equipment could affect stability, offering a practical approach to safer and more reliable fabrication.

We are describing a method to subject adherent cells to laminar flow shear stress in a sterile continuous flow circuit. The cells' adhesion, morphology can be studied through the transparent chamber, samples obtained from the circuit for metabolite analysis and cells harvested after shear exposure for future experiments or culture.

Beech bark disease is initiated by feeding activities of the beech scale insect that create fungal entry points in the bark. Trees that are resistant to the scale insect are also disease resistant. Here we present the protocol we have developed to screen individual beech trees for beech scale resistance.

Source: Jaideep S. Talwalkar, MD, Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, CT Simply stated, percussion refers to the striking of one object against another to produce sound. In the early 1700s, an Austrian inn-keeper's son, named Leopold Auenbrugger, discovered that he could take inventory by tapping his father's beer barrels with his fingers. Years later, while practicing medicine in Vienna, he applied this technique to his patients and published the first...

Utilizing Electroencephalography Measurements for Comparison of Task-Specific Neural Efficiencies: Spatial Intelligence Tasks

This manuscript describes an approach to measure neural activity of humans while solving spatially focused engineering problems. The electroencephalogram methodology helps interpret beta brain wave measurements in terms of neural efficiency, with the aim of ultimately enabling comparisons of task performance both between problem types and between participants.

Dissipative Microgravimetry Technique to Study Protein-Lipid Bilayer Interaction

2025

This video demonstrates a dissipative microgravimetry technique to investigate the binding of proteins to lipid bilayers. Small unilamellar vesicles are added to coat the surface of the quartz sensor of a microbalance. Utilizing the calcium ion-dependent binding of the target phospholipid-binding protein to the bilayer, changes in the oscillation frequency of the sensor and the dissipation of the oscillation are monitored to determine the nature of the protein-lipid bilayer binding.
