Inclined-tube Manometer

An inclined-tube manometer is a pressure-measuring instrument that uses a liquid column in a sloped tube to detect small differences in gas or fluid pressure. When pressure is applied to one side, the manometric liquid moves along the incline until the pressure difference balances the hydrostatic head, with the extended scale improving measurement sensitivity and resolution. In engineering, this device is used to measure low differential pressures in ventilation systems, laboratory apparatus, flow experiments, and process equipment. Its simple construction, direct operation, and high sensitivity make it useful for calibrating instruments and evaluating pressure losses across components.

Inclination of a Line

The inclination of a line describes its angle of tilt with respect to the horizontal axis. While a line itself is an abstract object with no thickness, its orientation on the Cartesian plane is determined by its slope, which reflects how steeply it rises or falls. The inclination angle, always measured counterclockwise from the positive x-axis, varies between zero and π radians for nonhorizontal lines. This angle directly relates to the slope, providing a geometric interpretation of the line's...

Jet Impinging on an Inclined Plate

Source: Ricardo Mejia-Alvarez and Hussam Hikmat Jabbar, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI The goal of this experiment is to demonstrate how a fluid flow exerts forces on structures by conversion of dynamic pressure into static pressure. To this end, we will make a plane jet impinge on a flat plate and will measure the resulting pressure distribution along the plate. The resultant force will be estimated by integrating the product between the...

Work Done Over an Inclined Plane

The center-of-mass framework helps to easily describe the work done on rigid bodies. Since the internal forces in a rigid body do no work, they can be ignored, and the external forces can be considered in the work-energy theorem. The work done by gravity to move a rigid body, or the work done by an opposing force to move a rigid body against gravity, can be calculated using the center-of-mass framework. It is the line integral of the force of gravity over the path, considered positive if...

Pressure Transducer: Calibration Using a Pitot-static Tube

Source: Shreyas Narsipur, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC Fluid pressure is an important flow characteristic that is required to determine the aerodynamics of a system. One of the oldest and still existing pressure measurement systems is the manometer due to its accuracy and simplicity of operation. The manometer is generally a U-shaped glass tube that is partially filled with liquid, as shown in Figure 1. The U-tube manometer requires no...

Moments of Inertia for an Area about Inclined Axes

2025

In physics and engineering, understanding the moments of inertia for a given area with asymmetrical mass distribution is critical for proper design and analysis. When considering an arbitrary coordinate system, the moments of inertia can be obtained by integrating the moment of inertia for an infinitesimal area element. Suppose another coordinate system inclined at an angle is considered. In that case, the transformation relations can be used to express the moments and product of inertia...
