Movement Recognition

Movement recognition is the engineering process of detecting, interpreting, and classifying physical motion from observed changes in position, orientation, or body configuration. It typically combines sensors such as cameras, accelerometers, gyroscopes, or depth devices with signal processing and machine-learning algorithms that extract spatial and temporal features, compare them with learned patterns, and identify a movement or activity. The resulting information supports human-computer interaction, robotics, wearable devices, rehabilitation systems, surveillance, and industrial automation. Reliable recognition can improve machine responsiveness, enable more natural control interfaces, and provide quantitative data for monitoring performance, safety, and human movement.

Source: Laboratories of Jonas T. Kaplan and Sarah I. Gimbel—University of Southern California The autonomic nervous system (ANS) controls the activity of the body's internal organs and regulates changes in their activity depending on the current environment. The vagus nerve, which innervates many of the internal organs, is an important part of the system. When our brain senses danger, vagal tone is inhibited, leading to a set of changes in the body designed to make us more prepared to fight or...

Revenue Recognition

The revenue recognition principle is a central guideline in accrual accounting that dictates when revenue should be recorded in financial statements. It requires that revenue be recognized when a company satisfies a performance obligation, meaning when it has delivered goods or completed services as agreed in a contract, regardless of when the customer pays. This principle ensures that income is reported in the accounting period in which it is actually earned, providing a more accurate...

Expense Recognition

An expense represents the outflow of economic resources a business uses to generate revenue, encompassing costs such as labor, materials, and services. In accrual accounting, the recording of these costs follows the expense recognition principle, which requires that expenses be recognized in the same accounting period as the related revenues. This alignment ensures that financial statements accurately reflect a business's economic activity during a specific period rather than simply tracking...

Eye movement monitoring (or eye tracking) reveals where in space the eyes linger, when and for how long. Here, we demonstrate how eye tracking can be used to investigate the integrity of memory in multiple participant populations, without requiring verbal, or otherwise explicit, reports.

A standardized evaluation method was developed for Wearable Mobility Monitoring Systems (WMMS) that includes continuous activities in a realistic daily living environment. Testing with a series of daily living activities can decrease activity recognition sensitivity; therefore, realistic testing circuits are encouraged for valid evaluation of WMMS performance.
