Multi Material Printing

Multi-material printing is an additive manufacturing technique that builds a single part from two or more materials, enabling spatially varied properties within one object. It works by selectively depositing, extruding, curing, or otherwise processing different feedstocks during successive layers or defined regions, while controlling material placement, bonding, and process conditions to create functional interfaces. In engineering, this approach supports components that combine stiffness, flexibility, conductivity, insulation, or tailored surface behavior. By integrating multiple functions into one build, multi-material printing can reduce assembly requirements, expand design possibilities, and improve the development of prototypes and advanced manufactured parts.

We demonstrate controlled pattern transformation of swelling gel tubes by elastic instability. A simple projection micro stereo-lithography setup is built using an off-the-shelf digital data projector to fabricate three-dimensional polymeric structures in a layer-by-layer fashion. Swelling hydrogel tubes under mechanical constraint display various circumferential buckling modes depending on dimension.
